We’ve all watched a Monday night football game where a player goes down and the medical team rushes onto the field. The cameras may cut away for a commercial break, but during that time, the injured player is met with frenzy of questions to quickly determine if their condition is stable and what the level of immediate assistance and care they will need based upon their injury. Once the medical team is able to quickly triage the injury, the player is taken from the field and immediately to the medical tent (for minor injuries that will not prevent them from returning to play) or back to the locker room or offsite for further medical evaluation. This additional expedited treatment will inevitably consist of advanced imaging to precisely identify the extent of the injury and determine next steps. In total, within 24 hours the medical team will have diagnosed, imaged, and determined next steps to treat the athlete’s injury.
Obviously, we aren’t all multi-million dollar athletes with potentially billions of dollars in revenue tied to our health and the outcome of a professional football season, but why can’t the average individual benefit from this same style of expedited diagnosis, advanced imaging, and medical intervention? At Aptiva Health, our foundation is on creating a system of integrated specialists and services driven to expedite needed care for patients. Whether you are an athlete, a weekend warrior, or just the average Joe that suffered an injury, our team of specialists can provide the same level of care professional athletes receive.
Our new patient intake coordinators triage patients over the phone to ensure patients suffering from acute or traumatic injuries are provided same-day appointments. This same-day appointment is provided by our emergency and general medical team. These physicians and providers have training in emergency medicine, urgent care medicine, and acute-injury response. They are able to quickly identify and diagnose suspected injuries. These acute injury specialists then refer patients for additional conservative care or immediate advanced imaging dependent upon the extent and traumatic nature of the injury.
Each of our state-of-the-art facilities provides a full imaging suite of digital x-ray to easily identify fractures and other acute trauma. If the injury is to a joint, the spine, or other area that is not easily viewed on x-ray, one, or a series of, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may be ordered. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) creates a computer-generated image of bony structures and soft tissues such as muscles, ligaments, tendons, and blood vessels. Our radiology team will be able to review, interpret, and return MRI findings within 24 hours to our medical team. Once received, our emergency and general medical team may refer the patient to the necessary specialty within our group or recommend additional treatment.
In all, the patient can receive a same-day medical appointment, imaging, and diagnosis to determine the next steps to treat their injury. This expedited care management also enables our Sports Medicine, Orthopedic, and Spine teams to intervene early if surgery is required based on the injury. A growing amount of research is proving that early orthopedic intervention for torn ligaments, tendons, and spinal injuries promotes the best patient outcomes and fastest recoveries.
